New Zealand Man Accused of Using Hedgehog As a Weapon Against Teenager
04-06-2008 10:42 PM

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Associated Press) -- A New Zealand man has been accused of assault with prickly weapon _ a hedgehog.

Police allege that William Singalargh picked up the hedgehog and threw it several yards to hit a 15-year-old boy in the North Island east coast town of Whakatane on Feb. 9.

"It hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks," police Senior Sgt. Bruce Jenkins said Monday. The teen did not need medical treatment, he added.

The Herald on Sunday newspaper reported that it was not known whether the hedgehog was dead or alive at the time of the attack, but that it was dead when collected as evidence.

Jenkins said Singalargh, 27, was arrested shortly after the incident on a charge of assault with a weapon. He is expected to appear in court again on April 17.

His lawyer, Rebecca Plunket, said Singalargh intends to plead innocent. The maximum penalty for the charge is five years in prison.

While using a hedgehog as a weapon in an assault is uncommon, Jenkins said, "People often get charged with assault for throwing things at other people.

So I'm at SDSU and I do my astronomy homework on the computer and it wont let me save it on my flash drive...or even send it to myself on my email. So I've decided to post it on livejournal so I can print it out at home. :-D

Astronomy Questions

1) How do we, astronomers, describe circumpolar constellations?
To circle around the pole in a counter-clockwise direction.

How did the ancient greek/romans?
The moving from rising in the east to setting in the west.

Give an example of one of their stories.
Gemini-When Castor sets in the west, Pollux follows him immediately afterwards, and vice versa for the rising.

2) Why do the stars appear to set? Sidereal days (days with stars as reference) are 4 minutes shorter than solar days.

What place did two myths say that the stars went during the day? Hades

3) Certain constellations will rise at night at different times in the year, explain the process, and give an example of a summer constellations and a winter constellation (from the northen hemisphere). The stars move to a different clock than the sun by four minutes. The constellations are still there but the sun is just blocking them out. An example of a summer constellation is Sagittarius. An example of a winter constellation is Orion.

Give 2 examples how these ancient used the constellations to explain the weather on earth. When Ceres was in utter despair over her daughter being kidnapped by Pluto, she decided to have nothing to do with crops causing a worldwide famine. When her daughter does come back for 6 months out of the year the weather on earth is good for harvest.

Also give one example on how the ancients observed that certain constellations are above the horizon when others are not. Ursa major and Ursa minor are given a position of honor by never setting as they run around Polaris every night.

4) If we are to believe that most constellations have not changed from their mythological shapes, explain what Horologium (clock), microscopium (microscope), telescopium (telescope) are all doing in the sky. *hint-think about what latitudes of earth one would need to be at to observe these constellations.*
These constellations are in the southern sky which is not visible to a geographical region north of the equator (like the Mediterranean). So all the constellations are the same but these new constellations are "new" because they were finally seen by someone who moved south of the Mediterranean.
